Mouse and rats are both small mammals of rodent kind. they can be found al over the world. Because of their looks, nature and behavior, it is not rare to think they are just different names for the same animal. But in reality, there are a lot of difference between mouse and rats and in this post, we will explain that.
What are Mouse?
A mouse is a small rodent. Characteristically, they are known to have a pointed snout, small rounded ears, a body-length scaly tail, and a high breeding rate. The best known mouse species is the common house mouse (Mus musculus). Mice are also popular as pets. In some places, certain kinds of field mice are locally common. They are known to invade homes for food and shelter. Domestic mice sold as pets often differ substantially in size from the common house mouse.
Despite being food for cats, dogs, fox’s, birds, snake and many other animals, mice are one of the most successful mammals in the world. This is due to their excellent ability to adapt to environmental changes.
What are Rats
Rats are various medium-sized, long-tailed rodents. Species of rats are found throughout the order Rodentia, but stereotypical rats are found in the genus Rattus. Other rat genera include Neotoma (pack rats), Bandicota (bandicoot rats) and Dipodomys (kangaroo rats).
Now lets look at some key difference between in the table below-
Mice are typically distinguished from rats by their size. Generally, when a muroid rodent is discovered, its called a mouse if it is smaller. Same way if its larger than its called a rat. The common terms rat and mouse are not taxonomically specific. Scientifically, the term mouse is not confined to members of Mus for example, but also applies to species from other genera such as the deer mouse, Peromyscus.
Mouse | Rat |
---|---|
Smaller in size | Larger in size |
Has a smaller range of diet | Eats almost anything |
They are Vermin, damages crops | The most widespread invasive species in many countries |
So, these are some differences between mouse and rats. Thanks for reading.
